Our Story

36_OurStory_CurrentBuilding_IMAGEHayes Barton Pharmacy has been a part of Raleigh since opening in the “Flat Iron Building” of Five Points in 1929. The name reflects the neighborhood which was named after the home estate of Sir Walter Raleigh in England.

Brothers Hopson and P.D. Gattis originally opened the store as an extension of Person Street Pharmacy, with Hopson later taking control and renaming it Gattis’ Hayes Barton Pharmacy.

In 1966, Hopson sold the business to Mr. Bill Wilson. Prior to this purchase, Bill had helped open the first Kerr Drugs in Cameron Village. Bill’s charisma and professionalism helped the business continue to flourish in the 1970’s and early 80’s despite stiff competition from numerous pharmacies in the area.

Needing another full time pharmacist to support him, Bill hired Tim White in 1983. With Bill Wilson’s mentoring and support, Tim bought the pharmacy in 1989. Bill continued to work at Hayes Barton Pharmacy until 2013, and is proud to have served as a pharmacist for over 50 years.

Under Tim’s leadership, the pharmacy has expanded and continued to provide professional care on a personal level. Known for its home delivery of prescriptions, the pharmacy was also one of the first in the area to administer flu shots.

Current Pharmacist Manager, Brent Talley, has been with the pharmacy since 2011 and is supported by a hard-working and knowledgeable staff including our Pharmacists, Jerry Cobb and Mary Boney.

Although retail pharmacy has changed immensely since 1929, the base phone number of 4641 and the philosophy of the pharmacy have36_OurStory_Building_IMAGE remained constant. Our philosophy is to be the local pharmacy you can trust to provide the best personalized care, professional advice, and convenient services. We promise your prescriptions and our people will be filled with care.
